Literature and Language Arts offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature, as well as Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Communication. Academic minors are offered in English Language and Literature, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Communication Studies, and Spanish Studies. Students can also work toward a teaching certificate in secondary education with English as a teaching field through LeTourneau’s Teacher Education Program.

English Language and Literature

Students wishing to major in English must attain at least a B in both ENGL 1013 (or ENGL 1014) and ENGL 1023 to be officially admitted into the English program and must attain at least a C in all other English courses.  All English majors are required to complete exit interviews with the English faculty during their final semester.

TESOL

The minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) allows students to become proficient in the elements of English and in the theory and practice of teaching it in cross-cultural settings.

Communication Studies
Program Coordinator: Dr. Karl Payton

The Communication Studies program offers three majors and a minor. Students may choose a BS or a BA in Communication with Integrated Media Management Concentration, or a BS in Communication with Sports Communication Concentration. All three majors are highly interdisciplinary, include required professional internships, and prepare students either for immediate employment or graduate school. The minor in Communication Studies begins with the General Education communication requirement and allows students to choose 15 additional credit hours from a list of courses common to the three majors.

The Communication Studies program provides a solid foundation for students preparing for careers in management, marketing, public relations, journalism, Christian ministry, education, social work, counseling, or law.

Spanish Studies

The minor in Spanish Studies permits a student to learn a language and also gain an understanding of Hispanic culture and society. To complete the minor, students typically participate in the Latin American Studies Program of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities.

Course descriptions and requirements for all programs are linked below. For more details about the people and programs of Literature and Language Arts, refer to LeTourneau’s web page.
