COUN 5023 - Counseling Skills and Techniques A study designed to train students in skills necessary to establish and maintain an effective helping relationship. Students will explore Christian characteristics of the counselor and create a philosophy of counseling that addresses the Christian worldview. Basic methods, skills, and techniques of counseling such as empathy, paraphrasing, reflecting, clarification, summarizing, and essential interviewing skills will be taught using video instruction and experiential means. Students will have the opportunity to practice these and many other basic skills through mock counseling role-plays, video recordings, and telehealth sessions with the objective of a simulating a real counseling session. Student skills and professional dispositions are evaluated to assess their degree of fit for the counseling profession. Level 1 Course. Students must make a B or better. Class 3.
