The Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is distinctive, emphasizing the integration of faith and practice. Several courses are designed to focus specifically on faith integration, which is a key component of the LETU experience.
The program is designed for students interested in pursuing licensure as a professional counselor in Texas and various other states, which enables students to sit for the licensure exam. *
Upon graduating, additional requirements are necessary to satisfy State Board expectations. This program will provide the student with tools necessary to pursue state licensure. Students need to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Leave of Absence - The Graduate Counseling Faculty understand that sometimes students need to take time off from their academics due to a variety of reasons. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their academic advisor or faculty member as soon as possible to discuss their next steps. If students are out two or more consecutive semesters, they will need to reapply to the program. If students are out for two or more years then the Department of Counseling Graduate Chair will re-evaluate their courses to determine if any courses are over five years old. Courses such as COUN 5023 and COUN 5033 need to be repeated so students remain current in the various areas of the counseling profession, and these courses are foundational to student beginning their clinical work.

*The CMHC degree meets educational requirements for the state of Texas. For those who are interested in licensure outside of Texas, please click here.

Assessment Policy

Student performance is assessed throughout the counseling program by CMHC faculty and administrative team. Assessment is based on academic work, clinical skills, professional dispositions, and compliance with state licensure ethical codes. The evaluation process fulfills CACREP’s professional gatekeeping standards to ensure students are adequately prepared for the counseling profession. If the CMHC faculty and/or administration determine there is a need for a formal remediation, the student is expected to fulfill the requirements of the remediation plan to continue in the CMHC program. Remediation could include the student retaking a course, which would be at the expense of the student. If the student refuses to complete the remediation plan, the student may be dismissed from the program. The assessment and remediation policies and procedures are also outlined in the CMHC Student Handbook.
