Students pursuing the School Counseling degree will be eligible for both licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) and certification as a school counselor.  The school counseling degree requires 66 credit hours.

*Those students pursuing school counseling certification must take MEDU 5563 - Diversity in Schools  in lieu of COUN 5093 - Counseling Diverse Populations .  This degree requires students to attend a 4-day intensive for COUN 5593 - Applied Lab, Ethics, & Treatment Planning .

Students seeking school counseling certification must provide a service record showing evidence of two years of teaching experience. Evidence of service or evidence of current progress toward service must be provided prior to the scheduling of the first practicum course. Students must pass the practice exam prior to receiving approval to sit for the state exam. A recommendation is that students pass the practice exam prior to the first practicum. Since students must complete 66 credit hours to meet school counseling certification requirements, a requirement for licensing is that students also complete the coursework for professional counseling eligibility.

Per Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines, students seeking School Counselor certification must be admitted into the Educator Preparation Program (EPP).  This is separate from being admitted to the University.  After a student is admitted to the University, students must meet the following requirements to be admitted into the EPP:
