Engineering technology is that part of the technological field that requires the application of scientific and engineering knowledge and methods combined with technical skills to achieve analysis and design objectives. LeTourneau’s engineering technology programs offer practical application, coupled with a strong theoretical base. These four year programs prepare students for positions in industry, sales, management, research, and service in a variety of technical areas.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology is an integrated general engineering technology degree offering the following concentrations:
- Materials Joining
The engineering technology program at LeTourneau University provides a well rounded education that emphasizes the application of engineering and scientific principles. Laboratory experiences throughout the program provide practical practice and hands on experience. Students also learn the applications of mathematics, science, and engineering science, coupled with communications, humanities and social sciences, and Biblical studies.
This well-rounded education prepares students for a variety of technical positions in industry, business, and service organizations that may include work in manufacturing, technical design, production supervision, testing, maintenance, service, and management. Many engineering technology graduates from LeTourneau have also found their education to be valuable for service in Christian missions.
The two concentrations with aeronautical science combine either electrical or mechanical engineering technology with aircraft systems courses. The combination of engineering technology and aeronautical science provides a solid program that prepares students for technical and supervisory positions in aviation and related industries and organizations.
It is the desire of our faculty that graduates from our program will develop successful and fulfilling careers, will be characterized by their interdisciplinary technical strengths, will exhibit effective communication skills, will add value to their team and to their company, will complete engineering-related designs and applications using both technical and practical knowledge, will be characterized by a high level of technical leadership skills, will be committed to continuous improvement, and will work diligently with a sense of Christian purpose in the workplace.
Program Educational Objectives
The program educational objectives of the engineering technology program at LeTourneau University are as follows.
- LeTourneau graduates will successfully enter the engineering technology profession or a related field, or will pursue graduate education.
- LeTourneau graduates will continue professional development throughout their careers.
- LeTourneau graduates will engage the global dimensions of their profession.
Applied Engineering Technology: LeTourneau University provides a unique opportunity for engineering majors to obtain a minor in applied engineering technology. The minor is designed to provide engineering students with the opportunity to broaden their education and obtain experience in the more applied areas of engineering technology in addition to engineering design. This minor is available only to students majoring in engineering.
Applied Science: LeTourneau University also offers an opportunity to combine arts and science programs with engineering technology programs. For any liberal arts or science major who would like a background in engineering technology, a minor in applied science is available with a wide selection of courses from the areas of engineering and technology.
Materials Joining Engineering Minor (MJE) : Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (BSET) can complete the Materials Joining Engineering (MJE) minor, which offers students additional training in materials joining and welding engineering.
Academic Expectations and Requirements
The program is designed to be completed in a four year period by students who have completed four units of high school English, two units of algebra, one unit of geometry, one half unit of trigonometry, and one unit of science (chemistry or physics). Both physics and chemistry are desired. Students who transfer from another college or university should understand that there are sequences of courses in the curriculum, up to six semesters in length, which build on one another.
Communications skills are required and are emphasized in all engineering courses. Written material presented for credit is graded for the correct use of English, form, and content. Oral presentations are expected in laboratories and classes, and they are evaluated on both content and presentation. Reading skills in both technical and non-technical areas, as well as proficiency in listening and evaluating, are also emphasized.
Industrial Advisory Council
LeTourneau University is privileged to have a distinguished group of engineering professionals who serve as consultants to the program. The Engineering and Engineering Technology Industrial Advisory Council meets twice a year to review the university’s engineering and engineering technology programs. Council members – practicing engineers from all parts of the country – provide guidance in keeping the programs relevant to the needs of industry and engineering practice in general. The members study facilities and equipment needs, provide valuable input on the curriculum, and interact with faculty members and administrators.
LeTourneau’s Engineering Technology program offers the BSET degree with various concentrations, and is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/.
